Do I Need To Season My New Pots And Pans?

This is a question I get asked a lot, it is important to know whether or not your new cookware requires seasoning before cooking with it.

When you purchase new cookware, do you need to season it?

  • The answer is not always yes. Follow this school of thought – if the cookware has a non-stick coating then it does not need seasoning.
  • However, if the cookware does not have a non-stick coating then seasoning is needed to prevent food from sticking.

Your buying stainless steel, cast iron, or carbon steel then you’re going to need to season it. Seasoning your pots and pans isn’t hard in fact it is an easy process. Seasoning with oil or seasoning with salt will help maintain their appearance and function for many years to come.

The benefits of seasoning are that it increases heat resistance, prevents rusting, makes cleaning easier by preventing food from sticking, and creates an environment that promotes even heating of foods cooked in them.

It’s also helpful to know how to season your new pots, pans, and skillets.

Here Are Some Tips For Seasoning Your Cookware:

There are two methods to season cookware, using vegetable oil or using salt. With both methods first, wash your cookware with hot soapy water, then dry thoroughly.

Salt Method: This is the method I prefer to use,

Before you use your cookware for the first time pour half to one cup of salt into the pot, pan, or skillet spread out evenly on the base, and heat on high.

Let the salt sit in the bottom, and move the salt around every 5 minutes or so, the salt will draw out any impurities in the metal, and seal the cooking surface.

Don’t worry the salt will not burn, however, it will become scorching hot so don’t touch it! After 20 minutes remove the cookware from the heat and let it cool with the salt still inside.

When done discard the salt and wipe out the cookware with a clean cloth. Do this every 6 months if you use them regularly.

Vegetable Oil Method:

Rub vegetable oil into the inside surfaces, and allow it to sit for 20 minutes before wiping off excess oil with paper towels or a clean cloth.

Then heat up the empty pan until smoking hot; wipe out with a paper towel if necessary. Repeat the process two more times.

CHEFS TIP:

  • Using rice bran or corn oil to season your cookware is a good idea as they both have a high smoke point and don’t burn easily.

Cookware Non Stick:

A popular choice for many cooks, but it’s not without its drawbacks. This type of cookware offers easy clean-up and is great for making food healthier by reducing the use of oil, butter, or grease.

Thick stainless steel-based non stick cookware holds the heat well and gives an even distribution that helps cook food consistently. The non stick coating wears off over time, making the pan no longer functional; does not do well in high heat environments.

Non stick thin aluminum pans are lightweight, however, they will warp and buckle and are not induction friendly.

However, you need to season the cookware and heat it to a high level before cooking and you need to use more oil and fat because of the stainless cooking surface.

You place food into a cold stainless steel pan or pot then heat it, you’ll end up fighting to get the food off the pan surface in one piece! Get carried away and burn the bottom, you’ll have a hard time cleaning it.

The thin non stick coating will very quickly scratch and peel making the pan virtually useless. When the coating starts to peel do not use it as the coating could flake off into your food. Also, the exposed bare aluminum could leave toxic residue on your food.

What Size Cookware Will Fit My Needs?

You’ll want to consider how many people will you be cooking for at one time, as well as the types of dishes that are on your menu.

A good rule of thumb is to get pots with lids large enough so they can contain all the ingredients for each dish without overcrowding them.

For example, if you’re planning on boiling pasta, cooking rice, or making stews and casseroles – oven proof pots with tight fitting lids are perfect. Do you cook for extended family and friends? Large pans and skillets with lids will work.

With some simple tips and tricks on how to keep your cookware looking new or as close as possible, you’ll never have an excuse again!

Firstly clean the base of your pots and pans, nothing whose than turning over a pot or pan only to find the base has caked-on grease and burnt-on grime. This can be a real hazard as this could become highly combustible and catch on fire!

The most effective way to clean the base is with vinegar and baking soda, get a quarter of a cup of baking soda add a small amount of water to make a slurry and spread evenly over the base of the pot or pan.

Wet some disposable paper towels with vinegar and lay them over the top of the baking soda and let sit for 1 to 4 hours depending on the level of grease and grime.

The chemical reaction with the vinegar and baking soda will remove most if not all the grease and grime, rinse off and dry.

The second tip is to avoid using metal utensils in non-stick pots or pans because they can scratch the surface of the pan, which could lead them to rust and become unsafe and unhealthy to use.

Finally is to clean your pots or pans properly after every use, no matter what.

This will remove any leftover food particles that may have built up over time, which can cause some really bad smells if left alone too long and affect the quality of food you are cooking.

Cleaning your cookware is the key to keeping it in tip-top shape, caring for your pots, pans, and skillets will ensure they last and continue producing delicious dishes for years to come.

Use a non-abrasive material to clean the bottom, rinse out and dry. Cleaning non-stick cookware is easy in most cases you’ll just need to wipe them out or rinse with hot water, then wipe dry.

If there are burned-on food particles on your non-stick cookware the last thing you want to do is use an abrasive material like steel wool. This will scratch the surface of the pan and cause damage that will render it unusable.

The best way to clean burned-on food particles on your non-stick cookware is to fill them up halfway with warm water.

Then add a good tablespoon of baking soda into it before turning up the heat to boil for 5 minutes, then let them sit for 30 minutes. Use a non-abrasive material to clean the bottom, rinse out and dry.
